As I've said before, Will Smith has a certain authenticity that I admire. I think one of the reasons for this is the fact that he seems so down to Earth despite his astronomical success. I also love the fact that he appears to be so grounded in the lessons of his Grandmother, who he mentions often.
This levelheaded approach to life is evidenced beautifully in Will Smith's secret to success:
Yup, that's the secret folks. Will Smith tells a story in the video below in which he says that if you get on the treadmill with him, you'll get off first or he'll die trying to be off last. He insists that he, "will not be outworked." You may have more talent, but you won't be able to work harder than him. That is a pretty refreshing message in this day and age of quick fixes and immediate results.
Busy Work is not the same as Hard Work
You may be thinking to yourself, "But this blog is about doing more with less - More is not better, Better Is Better." You're right. But I think there is a big difference in the kind of hard work Will Smith talks about and the kind of busy work that most people engage in. You have to distinguish between the effective and efficient work required to reach a goal.
You have to make a plan using some kind of tool like the CST's Training Hierarchy Pyramid. Then you have to put your nose to the grindstone and work your behind off to make it happen. That's the step that a lot of people choose to miss. It's much nicer to think that hacks and tricks take the work out of achieving a goal. They don't! But learning to learn and figuring out how to do effective work (which is how I interpret a "hack") will certainly shorten the learning curve substantially.
Take a watch...

If You Want Success, Start Taking These Three Actions Today:
Here are three concrete actions you can start today in order to implement and profit from Will Smith's secret to success.
1. Make a plan:
You can work really hard to get to Chicago, but if you meant to go to New York there isn't much point. That's where working "smarter" needs to go hand in hand with working "harder." Both are crucial. If you want to be smart in applying all your hard work, you need a plan. The first part of a plan is deciding on the destination. Then you figure out the starting point (what is your current reality?). From there you can break the process down into digestible bits and start on point number two...
My favorite tool for this is Circular Strength Training's periodization tool. This Training Hierarchy Pyramid (read more here and here) was designed to achieve physical performance goals, but is applicable to almost anything.
2. Take daily action:
For the last month and a half or so I have been using Dax Moy's success blueprint program. One of the key components of the program is the use of daily "Power Questions." This involves asking yourself what three actions you must do today to move you closer to your goals.
This may seem like an insignificant thing, but I find that the small daily actions count a lot more towards your eventual success than the "BIG MOMENTS." Like the drip, drip, drip of a small stream on a rock can wear away a groove, your consistent daily actions will wear a groove in your reality.
3. Get a coach, mentor or confidant:
Nothing drives you back to the grindstone like the knowledge that someone cares about your success. Having someone looking in on you, guiding you and, when needed, giving you a kick in the rear is priceless. This does not have to be a traditional arrangement, nor does it have to be expensive.
Right now I'm experimenting with a program called The Magic Hundred by Dax Moy and I'm getting great results. It is not a traditional approach, but it pre-incorporates a certain element of accountability which I'm finding effective. I also have coaches like Scott Sonnon and colleagues like Ryan Murdock and Pierre Blouin who help keep me on track.
So if you want to achieve big things, find out what works for you. Just promise not to try going it alone!

Coach,
Good article. I've seen you speak of Dax Moy's program for a little while now and based on your regard for it I've picked it up. I hope to become much more production in the near future, or at least the next 100 days or so...

Hey John,
Good to hear from you. I think if you put the Magic Hundred to good use you'll see significant results. I'm certainly further ahead right now than I would have been without it. Let me know how it goes for you!
Cheers,
Adam
